DON TAKES A CHOMP OUT OF THE BIG APPLE CON
MARCH 9th & 10
(AND AS FAR AS WE KNOW, HE DOESN'T SPIT IT OUT!)
Okay, so it's been awhile since Don's done a convention, but when GENE and
ADRIENNE COLAN make a rare guest star appearance at the Manhattan con, it
doesn't take organizer ALAN ROSENBERG much cajoling to get Don to agree to
appear alongside one of his idols.
In fact, Don and Gene will do a panel together for the first time in New York, New York!
And unlike their pairing at the San Diego Comic Con last year at an exciting panel, Don will take dynamic DWAYNE McDUFFIE's advice, and this time have some DETECTIVES INC.: A TERROR OF DYING DREAMS books to sell with him!
Thanks, Dwayne! Now how come I never thought of that?
So, if any of you are going to be in Manhattan on MARCH 9th or MARCH 10th, the convention's being held at the ST. PAUL CHURCH AUDITORIUM, COLUMBUS (9th) AVE & 60th STREET.
Come on over and let's talk!
Okay, folks! This is late! It should have been up long before. I
could blame it on the NAVIDAD VIRUS. Well, that certainly didn't help
things, but our intrepid webmaster Kevin Hall pulled Don through the tortuous
maze of computer wizardry to get him operative.
The book signing is SATURDAY - DEC. 9, 2000Don will be there with his buddy, ALEX SIMMONS, the creator of BLACKJACK! They may even show some of what the James Bond audience saw in New Orleans, namely part of the DETECTIVES INC movie. It's time may have come.
Where: SARGE'S MEGASTORE
124 STATE STREET
NEW LONDON, CONN. 06320
(860) 443-2004
The Time: 1:00.
But you won't know if you're not there. So this is late, but if you're in the New England area, stop on by, say hello, buy some books if you don't have them. Let Don and Alex sign the books for you!
They won't stay until the cows come home, cause then they're heading up to Don's moms for some home-made pie.
But we will be there for most of the afternoon, so get 'em up and move 'em out!
And hope Don gets up in time in the morning!
TAKE A CHOMP OUT OF THE BIG APPLE 2nd NATIONALCOMIC BOOK CON WITH EXCLUSIVE NEWS ON THE BILLY GRAHAM DRAWN SABRES!
The fliers are out! It says Don will be at the Big Apple Con in
Manhattan on
So, since its been printed, Golly Gee Miss Molly, it must be true!
If it is true, the Big Apple Con people can thank Alan Rosenberg for making it all happen!
And what's with the Billy Graham illustrated SABREs: AN EXPLOITATION OF EVERYTHING DEAR have to do with apples, big or otherwise?
Because right there in the
METROPOLITAN PAVILLION
on 125 W.18th St.
in the city so great they had to name it twice,
So walk on up, and he'll see you there!
GO TO COLLEGE!
Okay, if you're of a literal bent, Rainier & Denning and Blackjack won't physically be there, but their creators, Don McGregor and Alex Simmons will be sharing the stage for the
DIVERSITY IN COMICS PANEL.
Where's that, you ask?
At the NAUGATUCK VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE
750 Chase Parkway
Waterbury, Conn. 06708
But when? And at what time?
THURSDAY - NOVEMBER 9, 2000 12:30 PM
If you're in the New England area, travel on out to see comic book historian, Brother Professor Extraordinaire William Foster ask Don and Alex the probing questions, interrogate them ferociously in accordance with Academic standards (only Don and Alex have to face the red hot pokers!) and see if the duo have any answers!
Well, if you know either of these guys, they'll be talking even if they don't have the answers.
And maybe Alex will reveal the true story of the time he swung an ax at Don's head.
Truly a time of diversity in comics!
Be there!
Many of you have heard of the feature version of DETECTIVES INC.: A TERROR OF DYING DREAMS written and directed by Don McGregor.
Look, anybody in the entertainment biz will tell you, if you’re a writer in comics, you haven’t a chance in Hell of getting to direct your own characters and retain the integrity and tone of the series, if you’re…well…just a comic book writer.
But if you could show the Powers That Be that you can do it, and put it right before their eyes (IF you can get it before their eyes) well, then, maybe, you might, even though the odds are still high against you, have a chance to do it right!
That was Don’s theory anyhow!
Until the JAMES BOND WEEKEND 2000 however virtually no one has had a chance to see any of the DETECTIVES INC DUO and DEIRDRE SEVENS come to screen life!
Well, no longer, comics and movie buffs!
The time has arrived!
If any of you are in the New Orleans area who are Denning & Rainier fans - this is your chance to see the FIRST EVER SCREENING of any of Don’s directorial debut!
Don will even be there in person introducing each segment to be shown and answering questions afterward!
You gotta be at the JAMES BOND WEEKEND 2000 in NEW ORLEANS to see
ALEX SIMMONS as TED DENNINGbring this triumphant three-some to life!
RICHARD DOUGLASS as BOB RAINIER
MARSHA McGREGOR as DEIRDRE SEVENS
And it’s all happening at the JAMES BOND WEEKEND 2000 because of one of the annual festivities’ hosts: Miraculous MATT SHERMAN! And especially because of Picture Pioneer PAUL SCRABO!
Matt Sherman was the man who wanted Don to show some of DETECTIVES INC when Don wasn’t even thinking about being at the Bond weekend, even though he and Marsha had a great time last year when it was held in Las Vegas!
Paul Scrabo is the man who technically made it possible to have this happen, because of his digital and video wizardry! Well, those two factors certainly, and one big other determinant: his great kindness to work with Don on this, and put the fabulous presentation piece together!
So! How do you get to the Bond Weekend 2000. You can contact the before-mentioned Matt Sherman.
How do you get to Matt? Easy as the Big Easy.
If you want to read what’s up with the Bond Weekend 2000 what you do is go to

Even though he’s noted for saying, “Hang in there!” please don’t leave him “hangin’ there!” by his lonesome!
And before we end this piece check out

JOIN DON and GENTLEMAN GENE COLAN,
THE DEAN OF COMIC ART (San Diego Comic Con)
Thu Jul 20, 2000 - 2:00-3:00pm
That's right! Don is going to have the privilege of being on stage beside one of the greatest comic artists in the history of comics: Gene Colan! And you can be there with them! You can ask this wonderful man and artist all kinds of questions about what he has done and seen in his incredible decades of work in comics!
And you can get behind the scenes stories about the making of DETECTIVES INC. and RAGAMUFFINS and NATHANIEL DUSK. And maybe even when Gene and Don worked on KILLRAVEN, though that you'll have to ask Don about. Gene does remember the serpent stallion. What a great opening page of art that was! And it was our first page, ever!
LAUREN McGREGOR BRINGS A BRIGHT LIGHT TO SAN DIEGO COMICS CON
My lovely daughter, Lauren, will often be with me at the Con. You can't miss her, because wherever she goes, she brings light and energy. She's also the one who tells me what happened during the day when my brain's been sucked dry and I look at business cards and ask her, "Hon, you remember what this was all about?"
She may even show up one day as LADY RAWHIDE! You just never can tell.
GENE and ADRIENNE COLAN IN ARTISTS ALLEY
And many times you can find me with Gene and Adrienne Colan in the Artist's Alley! Adrienne and Lauren will be keeping me in line.
I am not, repeat, not, jumping up on any tables this year.
Unless provoked.
Well, maybe not even then, since last year, when I did it, I knocked Tom Orzechowski's glasses off his face, and I'm still mortified about it!
Forgive me, Tom!
So, join us, gang!
And all of you, come tell Gene how much you love him!
To paraphrase Ralph Kramden, "He's the greatest!"
DON - BACK TO BACK WITH BOND, JAMES BOND
and FANDOM/007FOREVER IN LIVE CHAT ROOM (Cyberspace)
Wed Jun 14, 2000 - 9:00-10:00pm
Yes, that's right, Don is going to be in a live Chat Room, which seems suspicious like those neon signs that screech pink neon messages of LIVE NUDE GIRLS LIVE! So, is this as opposed to a dead Chat Room?
Matt Sherman, Bond fan extraordinaire, and coordinator of the James Bond Annual 007 Weekend, assures Don he will get him INTO the Chat Room. Now, if Don is in there, he sure doesn't want to be alone. He needs you folks to ask questions, just to let Fandom.Com know someone is interested.
So, we go live to the place where Collectors can find everything from Bond to Don to Buffy, the Vampire Slayer! Don just threw that in there because Buffy is his favorite show these days. He doesn't even the answer phone on Tuesday nights.
So, what do you have to do? Matt says, well, we'll just copy what he says, so we can't screw it up. And then it's all on Matt's shoulders. Man, are we weasels or what?
"Take thirty seconds today and log in with Fandom/007Forever today for live chat with Don McGregor on Wednesday, June 14!Now, you can come in there and ask questions about anything, not just Bond, but DETECTIVES, INC., SABRE, ALEXANDER RISK, ZORRO, anything at all. Isn't that what goes on in Chat Rooms?Check out the site at www.fandom.com/james_bond and sign in under the button "Sign Me Up" under "Newsletter" or under "Chat".
Return to any button or heading marked "chat" anywhere on the Fandom site on the 14th to chat with Don, live!"
Matt Sherman 007
The only thing Don knows about it is, people go into these Chat Rooms, give themselves a fake name, and then lie to other outrageously. But here, the truth can be known.
So come in, find FANDOM.COM and join us!
There's nothing so lonely as a empty echo in Cyberspace!
To all those folks planning on catching Don there, heartfelt apologies, but we didn't want
you guys to get there & wonder where Don was!!
Keep checking back here for other appearances however!

DON DOES MADISON SQUARE GARDEN - JUNE 23 - 24 & 25!

CHECK IT OUT!
THE BIG APPLE CON (New York, NY)
Mar 18-19, 2000
Yes, Don is headed to the 60th St. & Columbus Ave, St. Paul Church Auditorium for the latest Manhattan Con. So, listen, don't have him lug in all those SABREs and DETECTIVES INC. graphic novels and not be there! Especially don't let him have to cart them all home.
Anybody ever been amazed at how heavy comics and graphic albums become once you pile a bunch of them on top of each other.
Besides, Don loves meeting the people at the table, and yes, he'll probably act a little nutty, but the nuttiness goes if he's got to face carrying back the same weight of books as he brought in.
And we'll have some other stuff there, as well. Some of the LADY RAWHIDE sets, although we are running low, and certainly some of the MASK OF ZORRO sets. So, for those of you who don't have them yet, stop on by.
And maybe Don'll even be able to give you the latest skinny on what's happening with RAGAMUFFINS and the BILLY GRAHAM drawn SABRE ALBUM: AN EXPLOITATION OF EVERYTHING DEAR.
Jim Hanley's Universe (New York, NY)
Feb 23, 2000
ALEX SIMMONS, creator/writer of BLACKJACK: BLOOD AND HONOR and Don will be at JIM HANLEY'S UNIVERSE, trading quips, behaving themselves, and signing and selling the new BLACKJACK GRAPHIC NOVEL, as well as DETECTIVES INC.: A TERROR OF DYING DREAMS and A REMEMBRANCE OF THREATENING GREEN! As well, as SABRE: SLOW FADE OF AN ENDANGERED SPECIES.
When, you ask.
On FEBRUARY 23, 2000!
From 4 - 7 PM!
Where is it? you may well want to know.
JIM HANLEY'S UNIVERSE
14 West 33rd Street (Near 5th Avenue)
NEW YORK CITY
There's gonna be a whole slew of Blackjack talent there, so you gotta drop on by!
Alex calls it a "jamboree." Don thinks he's been watching too much Letterman, who has a whole lot of jamborees on his Late Night show, but Don could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.
And let me take the opportunity, since Dave has come up, to wish him quick recovery from his heart surgery, and getting back to doing a whole lot more jamborees, himself!
And if you can't get to Jim Hanley's Universe because your Universe is far away from Manhattan, don't forget to hike on over to our GIFT SHOP, which you click right here, and you're there! You'll see the very books we'll be selling there!
And you can get the books personalized, even if you can't see us in person at this event. Check it out!
That's Entertainment (Worcester, MA)
Dec 11, 1999
See Don show up at the last moment at the Worcester, Massachusetts store signing at That's Entertainment, where the Dean of comic art, the master of mood, the charismatic character illustrator supreme, GENE COLAN will be with his lovely wife, Adrienne. See if Don embarrasses Gene. See if Don embarrasses himself! See if he has copies of DETECTIVES INC.: A TERROR OF DYING DREAMS. All of the above are a pretty safe bet. Drop on in on Saturday, Dec 11. Also joining long time friends & collaborators Don & Gene will be Walt & Louise Simonson and Lee Weeks. For more information and directions, go to the That's Entertainment website.
The BIG APPLE NATIONAL COMIC BOOK SHOW
NOV 12-14, 1999
THE BIG APPLE NATIONAL COMIC BOOK SHOW. I'm going to be there, along with DENNING & RAINIER and SABRE! I swear, I'm not going to jump up on any tables at this con...at least, not more than once. Having just had hernia surgery, this may actually be true.
Now, you want to know when it's happening?
NOVEMBER 12, 13 & 14!
But where, you ask?
At the METROPOLITAN PAVILION at 125 W. 18th St. (Between 6th Ave. & 7th Ave.)
in the city plagued by malevolent mosquitos, MANHATTAN.
Although, let me state, in being in Manhattan for 30 years, I don't believe I've ever encountered a mosquito, so come on out, stay out till after dusk, and if it's November, all those mosquitos'll be hybernating anyway. Waiting for spring. Waiting to strike! Yikes! Sorry, got carried away. Thought I was writing a comic.
They're billing it as THE LAST GREAT SHOW OF THE CENTURY!
Hope they don't drop a crystal ball or Dick Clark on our heads!
WBAI Radio BLACK PANTHER ANNIVERSARY SHOW
Fri SEP 24, 1999
The details have just been confirmed. I will be appearing on the BLACK PANTHER ANNIVERSARY SHOW on WBAI RADIO in New York on SEPTEMBER 24th. You tune in at 99.5fm on your radio dial at 11:15, and Black Panther host and fan, TRAPP EWART, will be asking me questions about my favorite Wakandan chieftain. Fact is, you can call in and ask some questions yourself!
Now if you aren't in the N.Y. area, but you ARE on the NET (and I guess
if you're reading this you are!) then LOG IN at
WWW.WBAIFREE.ORG.and from what Trapp tells me, you can hear the show. So, let me hear from you! And there'll be lots more on the Black Panther and those halycon and embattled days of creating Panther's Rage and Killraven, among others, in a new upcoming announcement about a monster interview in COMIC BOOK ARTIST MAGAZINE, with oral historian, and beer bottle dropper, JON COOKE!
You'll learn more about it here. Soon! Promise!
THE SAN DIEGO COMIC CON
AUG 10-15, 1999
My daughter, LAUREN, and I were at the explosive EXPO days at the con. We survived that blast, met a lot of fascinating people (and Lauren would often, after the Con, remind EXACTLY WHO those fascinating people were), and then the EXPO was suddenly over, the Con was about to open WIDE!
When it opens wide, it truly means that. The walls during the Expo shift aside. What was a wall behind you disappears. And section by section, tractors and men are watching the wall dividers slide into distant walls, and the room becomes vaster and vaster.
The booth you had at the Expo is now someone elses. They want you to hell and gone! Fast! But the walls haven't yet slid open yet to where your new place is supposed to be. You're lugging boxes of DETECTIVES INC.: A TERROR OF DYING DREAMS, and you have no idea where to put them. A day before the Expo, you didn't have ANY books, and we're told, despite claims that you would have "no problem having books for San Diego" that there was a mis-comunique, and the books went to Brooklyn and not San Diego. AND YOU WOULD NOT HAVE ANY DETECTIVES INC. TERROR books to showcase or sell!
Of course, that wasn't acceptable. You can't go down there and not have books that had been scoured over for three months to get them printed right.
We got books.
The problem was, now what to do with them until we could get to a new booth.
Move boxes hastily. Dodge the monster machinery. Try to find a place to put them where they wouldn't get run over!
There was some furor over the section we were in since signs had me at a table with Cherry comics. I didn't have the furor, nor did Lauren. I wasn't even aware there was a furor until that night, at one of the night-time outside festivities, where the furor was a topic of animated discussion. I can miss a lot of things going on around me when I'm at a ComicCon. I really am focused in on the person I'm talking to at the moment.
Appears the furor was a little premature, because I ended up sitting next to DEAN ZACHARY, who does STAR GODZ. We had a great time. Dean enjoyed my daughter, Lauren's company more than mine, which is easy to understand why.

In San Diego, I had a great time meeting with THIERRY MONET of SEMIC. DWAYNE TURNER, my good buddy who does BUTCHER KNIGHT, and who kindly provided a quote for the back cover of TERROR, introduced us. And there's a good chance you'll be seeing some Don McGregor projects happening in France. And if it all comes together, friends, THIS IS THE PLACE you'll learn about it first.
Thierry is a great lover of comics and their possibilities. Even in the midst of all the commotion of the con, it was wonderful meeting Theirry. We share a common passion. And his love for Denning and Rainier was sincere and meaningful.
I was off on Saturday to do a CD on the history of comics, appearing right after NEAL ADAMS. Now, you'll learn more about this, when you come back to this Don McGregor site, but when this CD comes out in the year 2000, you'll be able to see me talking about DETECTIVES INC. and SABRE, and also flash to where the books are.
This gives us another chance at survival in the market place.
And we need all the chances we can get.
Speaking of that, we met with the people of NEXT PLANET OVER.COM and you should be seeing a more expansive section up on their site on SABRE and DETECTIVES INC., including reviews and such. We'll let you know when it all comes together!
Now, I'm leaving out a lot of folks and companies we met with, all we'll be here forever, and already it's taxing my memory.
We did meet with JONAH WEILAND and BEAU YARBROUGH of COMIC BOOK RESOURCES and do some radio spot promos for them. Great folks! Let me know if you hear the spots. And it'd be interesting, for me, to learn if some of you coming to the site learned of it from COMIC BOOK RESOURCES.
And Lauren and I had a great time talking with JEFF VAUGHN and MARK HAYNES of REALM PRESS, of which you should be learning more shortly. They showed me a great PRESENTATION PIECE they did for their BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA book, and we discussed doing some variation on that for DETECTIVES INC.
But even more, Jeff would like to do a NEW (THAT'S BRAND SPANKING NEW DETECTIVES INC. short story) for their ANTHOLOGY COMIC, REALM PRESS PRESENTS.
I'll let you know more about it as it progresses.
Jeff wants to have it out by Christmas.
Man, I believe he's an optimist of the highest order.
But hey, miracles can happen! We did get DETECTIVES INC. to San Diego.
There were also a bunch of other foreign publishers talking to us, and we'll see what happens.
Meantime, here's a photo of LAUREN with my GRANDSON, ERIK.

Lauren is available for modeling jobs (LEGITIMATE MODELING JOBS, FOLKS! Did Dad emphasize that enough?). To contact her, or if you're interested in her ATTENDING YOUR CONVENTION, you can do it through
M & R PRODUCTIONSOr CALL AT:
2929 Avenue R
Box 317
Brooklyn, NY 11229
(718) 339-4269On the last day of the con, my son, ROB MCGREGOR, helped me handle all the last minute things, including getting an number of SABRE and DETECTIVES INC. books to BUD PLANT. You don't get the books from M & R, you can also get them from Bud, not to mention, you can bug your LOCAL COMIC BOOK STORE and tell them Graphic Albums never go out of style. And thanks, Rob, for doing the quick math, quicker and more accurately than I ever could, and lugging those books around. Isn't it amazing how quickly those books start to weigh a lot?
For STORES, the books are in DIAMOND'S STAR SYSTEM, and are easily ordered, and they can call the M & R phone number and M & R has DISCOUNTS and everything else needed. There's a whole lotta ways to get to these books! Including, as is apparent, right through this cockamamie website!
And the Lauren, who was with me every day at the table. It's not hard to get me to San Diego when both my daughter and son are there.
Now, if only Gene Colan could have been there and I could have shown him how terrfic his art printed in this NEW VERSION of A TERROR OF DYING DREAMS! That would have been icing on the cake!
